Owning a home battery is only part of the picture. How it is charged, which tariff it sits on, how the inverter is configured and whether the system can take part in optimisation or flexibility services can all affect how useful it is.
That is why we think Battery Boost is worth knowing about. It is a separate UK information resource covering battery storage, smart tariffs, optimisation and grid flexibility, with the aim of pulling together information that is otherwise spread across supplier, manufacturer and platform websites.
What is Battery Boost useful for?
One of the most useful sections is the battery and solar tariff tracker. Rather than treating one headline unit rate as the whole story, it separates import prices, export arrangements, charging windows and eligibility so you can compare how a tariff may actually work with a battery.
It also explains the difference between ordinary time-of-use tariffs and managed battery services. Those are not the same thing: some tariffs simply give you cheaper import periods, while others may actively control an eligible battery to charge or export at particular times.
Why this matters when choosing a battery
Two homes with the same battery can get very different results depending on when they use electricity and how the battery is operated. Capacity matters, but so do inverter power, charging windows, daytime usage and the tariff attached to the property.
For that reason, we increasingly look at the wider setup rather than just asking “how many kWh of battery do you want?”. Our own Battery Storage System Builder helps narrow down suitable hardware, while Battery Boost is useful for understanding what can happen after the equipment is installed.
Tariff information can change
Energy tariffs move regularly, so any rate should be checked at the time you are making a decision. Battery Boost is designed around that problem: where regional pricing is available it asks for a postcode, shows the source and indicates when information was checked rather than presenting an old price as permanently current.
That is also how we intend to treat tariff information on The Eco Supermarket. Where a live price matters, we will either link to the current source or clearly state the date a figure was checked.
A good starting point
If you already have a battery, start with Battery Boost’s tariff section. If you are still deciding what battery to install, our practical battery storage guide and Battery Storage System Builder are better starting points.
